Why shouldn’t I auto-pay things?
I am true believer that customers should not turn on an auto-payment feature at any site.
There are several reasons to this. It’s not just the fact that the company might not know
how much money is really behind your credit card, but that they will be provided with your
permission to charge that card cyclically at the amount they desire. Not only that, but their
billing system decides when to withdraw the money from your account. I’m not writting this
just because of the incident that dreamHost had. I’ve had other companies sending me e-mails
for items no longer in their hold, but they told me that I would be charged later that month
because I had selected to use their auto-payment feature. I turned it off and it should expire
from their system soon, but if I had changed my e-mail and not payed attention, I would probably
be wondering where my money went.
Auto-payment features may seem nicer since you don’t have to constintly login to make the payments,
but bugs do come around and it’s safe when a human is maintaining part of the control instead of handing
it all over.
I did mention earlier that we might leave dreamHost, but we’ll give them another chance since they’ve
been good for the price, and we weren’t really effected (Except for the e-mails asking for money) and
we don’t use auto-payment features.
